The parts of a typical policy.

5 min read

A standard homeowners policy bundles several kinds of coverage. Knowing the parts helps you read your declarations page.

Typical parts

  • Dwelling: the structure of your home
  • Other structures: a detached garage, shed or fence
  • Personal property: your belongings
  • Loss of use: extra living costs if you can't live at home after a covered loss
  • Personal liability and medical payments to others

Your mortgage

Lenders usually require homeowners insurance and may pay it from an escrow account.
